A Prairie Shutter

My new year started out with a list of  projects a mile long...as usual.
I wanted to take advantage of the free time my husband has during the winter
before his busy season begins in the spring.
So, after a quick trip to Home Depot for some wood planks and T-hinges,
Project #1 was quickly completed.

This little south facing window in the kitchen fills our kitchen with light in the spring and summer,
but it also allows the cold of winter and the heat of summer to creep in.
The windows in this old farmhouse are less than energy-efficient,
so creativity in keeping out the cold and heat is imperative...

until we win the lotto and can afford to replace them all.

So, the simple solution to keeping us a bit warmer this winter
was the addition of another prairie shutter.

You can see the other pink prairie shutters in our home here and here.

The Mister built them in an hour's time.
I immediately swished on a coat of my favorite prairie pink,
and the next morning they received a scrubby white-wash of creamy white.

A bit of roughing up with my palm sander,
and they were up in a flash.

Our kitchen is already feeling a bit warmer.
I love pulling them open each morning to the let the pale winter sunshine in,
and closing them at dusk against the cold, starry night.

{♥ I want to thank each and every one of you for your heartfelt prayers and comforting words during the recent loss of my sweet little Sophie. They meant so very much to me. God bless you all. ♥}

  8. Good morning, Laurie!

I am so happy that I discovered your blog when I started mine up again in December. I LOVE your shutters. In fact, this is exactly what I want to do in our tiny cottage! We built the cottage 5 years ago, passed the final inspection, and immediately moved on to other big projects. Finishing trim and window treatments are on my 2014 wish-list.

But we're getting closer. We are still working on building our heated workshop. Just passed inspection on the rough wiring, and will be measuring for insulation today. But once it's done, I'm looking forward to finishing up the trim & making shutters (just like yours)!

Hugs, and Happy New Year to you and yours,
    Lin

  22. Inspiring Laura, and what a guy!
I have to do the guy thing around here, and I am still going to make some, I am just looking for the right time, right wood, and having to trim off my windows as you have done to yours.

Love the look for the old or heat, and just the effect of a euro chic home.

  27. I love those wooden shutters! Such a great old fashioned idea to insulate your windows and provide privacy when needed. Your husband must be like mine. Mine is less busy in the winter and then very busy in Spring. I'm doing the same thing and taking advantage of his "down time". LOL! So sorry to hear about your cat's passing. Having a pet pass away is a VERY difficult thing! They are members of our family and the grief is just as strong. Lately, I've been seeing a lot of bloggers losing their pets. It seems you're not alone this time of year.

  37. I found your blog from your friend. I love your shutters. We planned for two years now to make some for outside the house. The winds are strong here and they predict seasons will become more severe in future. I worry about objects flying and hitting our windows. Yes I could hear the angels singing ;-)
